This place was busy in the 70s. My mom used to come here to shop from McLeansboro. There was a pharmacy (name?) I used to buy comics and albums from. You could eat at Woolworths. There was a Singer sewing shop in the corner and Mont. Wards was clean and modern. Across the street was a store called 3-D (kinda like Big Lots). Yeah, I remember a lot of people used these places. I guess it shut down as business moved to the other side of town. Jeff Holland McLeansboro, Il
ReplyDeleteSuper X, wasn't it?
DeleteThe drug store name was Super-X drugs. The "3-D" store was originally opened as "Page's", a department store. It was build and opened around 1970. Later it was sold and was re-named "Danner's". It eventually was sold again and became "Big Lots". Big Lots moved to the new mall a few years ago (c 2014). The old building is now home to National Railroad Equipment Co.
ReplyDeleteI remember 3D barely.
ReplyDeleteI have a snapshot from April, 1980 and it shows the Kroger (which I think was still in business at that time), as well as a CURTIS MATHES store (televisons), and a Super X Drugs. The Montgomery Ward store was at the far end on the right. The far left end store has been a Country Fare and a Pic & Pac, not sure if it has operated under other names?
